Chris Marker (1921–2012) was a French filmmaker, photographer, writer and editor whose work moved continuously between cinema, still images, travel, politics and memory. Films including La Jetée and Sans Soleil construct narratives through photographs, archives, voice and montage, while his Petite Planète books reinvented the travel guide. Darwin selects Marker because his practice collapses boundaries between photograph, film, book and archive, treating sequencing and editing as forms of thought.
