Miron Zownir, born in Karlsruhe in 1953, is a German-Ukrainian photographer, filmmaker and writer known for uncompromising black-and-white images of marginal urban life. Since the late 1970s, he has photographed sex workers, addicts, outsiders and underground scenes in cities including Berlin, New York and Moscow. Darwin selects Zownir for a confrontational street photography shaped by direct proximity to subjects and realities usually excluded from respectable visual culture.
