Tsutomu Yamagata, born in Tokyo in 1966, left a corporate career to become a photographer. Thirteen Orphans portrays nonconformists around Shinobazu Pond in Ueno, while Ten Disciples explores illness, mortality and Buddhist ideas through a remote valley visited by cancer patients. Later, SURVEILLANCE radically changed his method through automated cameras. Darwin selects Yamagata for an uncompromising practice connecting social margins, portraiture and distinctly Japanese approaches to life and death.
