    Un’ampia antologia visiva che ripercorre oltre un secolo di editoria fotografica in Cina, The Chinese Photobook è al contempo archivio e provocazione, curata da Martin Parr e dal duo olandese WassinkLundgren, con contributi di importanti studiosi tra cui Gu Zheng e Stephanie H. Tung. Questo volume mostra come i photobook in Cina abbiano funzionato non soltanto come oggetti estetici, ma anche come strumenti ideologici, documenti delle comunità e veicoli di resistenza.

    Dal pittorialismo della tarda epoca Qing alla propaganda maoista, dall’autoespressione dell’epoca delle riforme alla sperimentazione globalizzata degli anni 2000, questo libro sviluppa una narrazione polifonica della Cina attraverso la sua produzione a stampa. Sono riprodotti oltre 250 photobook, molti dei quali mai visti prima al di fuori della Cina, e ciascuno è collocato nel suo specifico contesto politico e visivo. Documentazione d’impatto, immagini messe in scena, album vernacolari: i materiali entrano in collisione, si sovrappongono e si contraddicono, rivelando le tensioni e le fratture dietro l’immagine approvata dallo Stato.

    Pubblicata da Aperture e basata sulla storica mostra itinerante, questa seconda edizione (2016) è oggi un’opera di riferimento fondamentale per chiunque voglia tracciare le intersezioni tra fotografia, cultura della stampa e potere. Si colloca accanto a The Latin American Photobook e al precedente The Photobook: A History di Parr, come parte di una deliberata riformulazione dei canoni fotografici a partire dalle periferie globali.
