Jamel Shabazz – Albums, Steidl 2022

Street culture becomes family archive here. This volume gathers Jamel Shabazz’s early photographs as they originally circulated: small prints sequenced inside personal albums from 1970s and 80s New York. Before gallery walls, these images lived in plastic sleeves—portraits of friends, crews, couples, style and pride—building a collective memory from within the community. The book restores that vernacular format, foregrounding dignity, self-fashioning and the social life of the print in downtown and Brooklyn neighborhoods.
