Martina Holy Communion — Mauro D'Agati — 89books

Mauro D’Agati follows Martina’s First Communion within the dense mixture of family, ritual and social display that surrounds Catholic ceremony in Sicily. Rather than isolating the religious event, he photographs the domestic preparations, gestures and relationships that give it its local character. Published by 89books, the book works as a compact study of Palermo family life, where faith, performance and affection occupy the same space and the formal ritual is continually interrupted by ordinary human behaviour.
