Cikáni — Josef Koudelka, Torst, 2011 (First Czech edition)
Josef Koudelka’s Cikáni is one of the most complete photobooks ever made. First published in France as Gitans, this 2011 Torst edition returns the work to its origin—restoring the Czech title and voice of a project that defined Koudelka’s early career. Shot between 1962 and 1971 across Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, France and Spain, the images follow Romani families through a life of movement, ritual, survival and grace.
Everything here is exact: the black-and-white images rendered in deep matte duotone, the heavy textured paper, the oversized format that opens like a door into another world. The blacks hold like Moriyama at his sharpest, but the eye is Koudelka’s alone—cinematic, human, stripped of all excess. The layout is wide and generous. Faces glow. Time breathes.
This is one of our most recommended books at Darwin—not because it is rare, but because it is essential. Ten out of ten, in every aspect.
