Founded in Tokyo in 2009 by Mark Pearson, ZEN FOTO occupies a singular position between gallery, publisher and archive. Dedicated to Asian photography, it has consistently championed work that falls outside dominant institutional and market narratives. Darwin returns to ZEN FOTO for its sustained engagement with Japanese and Chinese photography, from historical figures to overlooked contemporary voices. Its photobooks often emerge directly from exhibitions, preserving photography as a space of circulation, encounter and rediscovery rather than cultural consensus.
