Story of the Shinjuku Thieves — Katsumi Watanabe — Akio Nagasawa Publishing — 2013
Watanabe photographed Shinjuku from inside its nightlife, working from 1965 as an itinerant portrait photographer who charged 200 yen a sitting. Bar workers, sex workers, gay men and yakuza posed directly for him in clubs, hotels and on the street, producing portraits shaped by exchange rather than observation from a distance. This 303-page volume gathers his photographs of Shinjuku from the late 1960s and 1970s, preserving a social world radically altered since. Published in a numbered edition of 500 copies.
