Kabukicho appears here before its sanitisation: sex, violence, friendship, exhaustion and play compressed into the same streets. Made between 1998 and 2006, Yang’s black-and-white photographs come from sustained proximity to Shinjuku’s nightlife and people, including periods when he himself slept on cardboard in the street. The work resists treating the district as spectacle; tenderness and vulnerability repeatedly interrupt its harder surfaces. First published in 2016, the book has remained in circulation through successive printings, reaching its sixth in 2026.
