Anonymous Man and Woman (Tokyo 1976-78) — Issei Suda — Akio Nagasawa Publishing — 2021
One hundred portraits made across Tokyo between 1976 and 1978, brought together here for the first time as Suda originally conceived the series. Forty-nine appeared in Camera Mainichi in 1978 and all 100 were exhibited at Nikon Salon, but the complete sequence remained unpublished as a book. Suda’s anonymous pedestrians are never treated as background figures: direct, eccentric and self-possessed, they turn the street into a succession of individual encounters. Published posthumously in 600 numbered copies, each stamped with the artist’s personal seal.
