Three interconnected series—shadow puppet, bystander and on the way home—come together in Katayama’s sustained examination of the body, photography and the presence of others. Self-portraits, friends and handmade objects share the frame, making each image evidence of an encounter rather than a self-contained representation. Katayama describes photography as establishing a fact between subject and photographer: proof that “we were certainly there.” Published alongside her leave-taking exhibition, the book was issued in 900 numbered copies.
