Looking Back — Tamiko Nishimura — Zen Foto Gallery — 2024

Nishimura returns to photographs made between 1968 and the 1970s, when travelling and photographing were almost inseparable. Selected from roughly 1,000 images, the book moves from her student years and Tokyo’s underground theatre to pre-reversion Okinawa and winter journeys through northern Japan. Rather than imposing a retrospective order, its 113 photographs preserve the immediacy of the snapshot: strangers, children, landscapes and fleeting gestures encountered along the way. Fifty years later, they read simultaneously as personal memory and an unforced record of a changing Japan.
