Hokkaido by Daido Moriyama, 2008 limited edition

Daido Moriyama’s Hokkaido is a monumental photobook—both physically and emotionally—marking one of the most personal and elegiac entries in his vast output. Published in 2008 by Rat Hole Gallery in a limited edition of 1500 copies, the book gathers over 280 images made during multiple visits to Japan’s northernmost island, a place steeped in personal memory and loss for Moriyama, whose mother died there.

Shot in grainy black and white, printed lush and dark, Hokkaido trades the dense urban friction of Tokyo for something slower and starker—snow-covered streets, empty landscapes, backlit silhouettes, cracked glass, tired architecture. The surface textures are ghosted, blurred, scratched, as if weathered by wind or grief. There are people, but they often turn away or vanish into shadow. Throughout, Moriyama’s signature visual language—close-up, fragmentary, tactile—becomes introspective and searching, less prowling than lingering.

If Farewell Photography was a howl, Hokkaido is closer to a whisper: elegiac, raw, and deeply felt. It’s a book that belongs in the Darwin archive as a record of a photographer circling back, retracing terrain both geographic and emotional. A late masterpiece.
