Latin Fire: Otras Fotografías de un Continente —, PhotoEspaña 2015
Latin Fire is a landmark publication and exhibition drawn from the Anna Gamazo de Abelló Collection—one of the most significant European holdings of Latin American photography. Published for PHotoEspaña 2015, the book gathers 215 images by over 60 artists from eight countries, offering a complex, visceral visual map of the second half of the 20th century in Latin America.
Rather than impose a singular narrative, Latin Fire allows patterns to emerge through contrast and proximity: protest and play, eroticism and trauma, the body and the barricade. These are otras fotografías—works that fall outside the canon, outside familiar documentary frameworks. We encounter political uprisings, gender performance, experimental montage, street scenes, and intimate domesticities that reveal the region’s most burning concerns: identity, violence, faith, repression, and resistance.
Designed by Olivier Andreotti and published in a bilingual Spanish-English edition, Latin Fire is both archive and rupture. It refuses the exoticising gaze, instead proposing a photography of combustion, fragmentation, and necessary intensity.
