Lucha Libre – Frédérique Bangerter

This risograph book-object by Swiss artist and editor Frédérique Bangerter is part of the Darwin archive because it performs a collision of bodies and ideas: Mexican masked wrestling meets Enlightenment and anarchist philosophy in a pulp-red, deep-blue zine. Published without a clear imprint or date, Lucha Libre assembles a surreal and satirical tournament where Immanuel Kant, Arthur Schopenhauer, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and Pierre-Joseph Proudhon are recast as luchadores in a delirious speculative theatre.

Printed in high-contrast halftone with deliberate graphic crudeness, the book adopts the visual codes of vintage lucha libre flyers and bootleg cinema ephemera. Photomontages of real masked wrestlers are intercut with fragments of philosophical texts, inviting a kind of metaphysical smackdown between order, chaos, freedom, and fatalism. The inclusion of full credit lines ("Dirección: Frédérique Bangerter. Producción: Elvis Miranda") heightens the parodic tone, proposing the book itself as both film and fight.

Lucha Libre belongs in Darwin as a rare object that inhabits the unstable terrain between artist’s book, satire, political détournement and vernacular print culture. It’s not a pastiche—it’s a headlock on Western thought.
