Alvin Booth’s Osmosis, published in 2006 by Galerie Vevais, is a quietly carnal meditation on transformation, fluidity, and the body’s spectral potential. Printed with an almost alchemical sepia tonality, the book conjures an eroticism that is less explicit than osmotic — images of limbs, hair, skin, and breath blur into one another, merging anatomical fact with dream-state suggestion.

Booth, trained in both prosthetics and photography, stages bodies not just as subjects but as mutable vessels. His figures often appear submerged, suspended, or merging with natural forms: bone becomes petal, tendon becomes fibre, hair becomes cloud. The softcover book has the feel of an artefact — textured, grainy, and intimate — suggesting a tactile proximity to the very surfaces it depicts.

Osmosis resists categorisation: it is neither pure photobook nor fetish object, but something in between, closer perhaps to a ritual manual for corporeal awareness. It belongs to a lineage of works that include Hans Bellmer’s anatomical deliriums and Francesca Woodman’s disappearing acts — but Booth’s voice is calmer, more speculative, more about touch than trauma.
