Seventy previously unpublished photographs form the centre of a son’s encounter with his father’s legacy. Marco Bischof edits Werner Bischof’s work as an act of inquiry and remembrance, giving the book a personal structure alongside its photographic significance. Bischof’s concern with the aftermath of war belongs to a wider attention to human dignity, daily life and the search for beauty under difficult circumstances. His death in Peru in 1954 makes the retrospective encounter between father and son especially poignant. Texts by John G. Morris, Marco Bischof and Dieter Bachmann add different perspectives on the photographer and the archive. The result connects the public life of documentary photographs with the private questions inherited by a family.
