Random Walk — Daido Moriyama (Limited Edition, Signed, 2021)

Random Walk is both a photobook and an invitation — a chance to walk with Daido Moriyama through a mutable cityscape of your own making. Published in 2021 by IBASHO and the(M) éditions, this boxed object contains 100 Polaroid stickers — 62 in black and white, 38 in colour — to be affixed by the viewer into the accompanying hardcover volume. The result is not fixed, but composed: every reader becomes editor, flâneur, and accomplice in Moriyama’s photographic drift.

The format is intimate, almost cinematic — long and narrow like a contact strip. The images, all Polaroids, sharpen Moriyama’s lifelong play between raw realism and visual abstraction. His black-and-white photographs offer what he calls a “symbolically abstract” dream-state, while the colour images, paradoxically, reveal the surrealism embedded in reality itself. Whether grainy or hyperreal, each image is a threshold — a glimpse of what Moriyama names the “alien world” hiding within the everyday.

A limited edition of 1000 numbered and signed copies, Random Walk is a tactile, participatory object that belongs in Darwin not as a traditional monograph, but as a visual experiment. It’s Moriyama as method — photographic walking as a ritual of estrangement.
