Todd Webb in Africa — Outside the Frame
Published by Thames & Hudson in 2021, is part of the Darwin Bookshop because it offers a rare, full-colour portrait of mid-century Africa taken through the lens of an American modernist trained under Ansel Adams. Commissioned by the United Nations in 1958 to document progress and development across newly independent and soon-to-be independent African nations, Webb traversed Ghana, Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Northern and Southern Rhodesia (now Zambia and Zimbabwe), Malawi and the Congo. But his images—unusually lush, composed, and open—slipped the boundaries of propaganda.
In these saturated Kodachrome frames, the world appears both posed and unguarded: a Texaco attendant in Togoland, a sea of white-clad cyclists, girls casting glances from the shadow of a tree. Webb’s eye lingered not on extraction or exoticism, but on streets, gatherings, movement, and architecture, rendered with a painterly clarity that resists cliché. Rather than presenting a vision of ‘Africa’ from above, the work feels attuned to something quieter—life moving sideways, beyond the frame of official narratives.
Long unseen and largely unpublished, Webb’s photographs were archived for decades and only rediscovered recently, prompting a critical reassessment of their beauty and omission. “Outside the Frame” doesn’t just showcase images—it interrogates them, guided by essays from Aimée Bessire and Erin Hyde Nolan that unpack both the images and their political backdrop. It is a document of time, space, and silence: Africa in colour, 1958, as seen by a man who stood both inside and outside the project of visual empire.
