Cristina de Middel, born in Alicante in 1975, is a Spanish photographer whose work questions photography’s claim to documentary truth. After working as a photojournalist, she gained international recognition with The Afronauts, reconstructing Zambia’s little-known 1960s space programme through staged photographs, archival material and fiction. Darwin selects De Middel for her inventive use of the photobook and for exposing how images manufacture supposedly factual narratives.
