Diego Zapatero, born in Zaragoza in 1982, is a Spanish photographer and visual anthropologist whose work has developed through extended field research in Java. For over a decade he documented Indonesian cultural traditions, particularly Javanese masked dance. His books The Last Breath of the Prince and Malangan examine Wayang Topeng communities. Darwin selects Zapatero for transforming long-term anthropological research into precise photographic records of ritual, identity and cultural transmission.
