写狂人色日記 / Shakyōjin Iro Nikki by Nobuyoshi Araki, 1992 first edition
One of Nobuyoshi Araki’s most visually frenetic and typographically riotous photobooks, Shakyōjin Iro Nikki (写狂人色日記) translates roughly to The Erotic Diary of a Photomaniac—a self-declared fever dream of images, desire, and diaristic overload. Published in 1992 at the height of Araki’s cult notoriety, the book is a chromatic, handwritten, hand-marked torrent of collaged photographs and daily obsessions, printed in full-bleed across vivid, chaotic spreads.
The cover alone—a blaring orange field scrawled with calligraphic ink, brushstrokes, and a bold ‘92—sets the tone for what’s inside: an unfiltered transmission from Araki’s compulsive eye, fusing eroticism, street snapshots, food, women, dolls, skies, and self-portraits into a singular visual syntax. Each page functions as a kind of performative act, as though Araki were trying to capture every fleeting moment before it vanishes.
Unlike the controlled violence of Sentimental Journey or the sorrowful beauty of Winter Journey, here the register is almost manic—Araki as mad monk of the Tokyo everyday. The book’s design amplifies this instability: marker annotations, brush calligraphy, pasted elements and scribbles turn the photobook into a hyperactive personal zine at scale. It belongs in the Darwin archive as a maximalist Araki object—messy, excessive, urgent, and defiantly alive.
