包茎亭日乗 (Hōkeitei Nichijō) — Nobuyoshi Araki, 1994
Published in 1994, Hōkeitei Nichijō—literally “Foreskin Pavilion Daily Record”—is Nobuyoshi Araki at his most performative, perverse, and diaristic. The book collects over seven years of monthly photographic columns originally published in the gossip magazine Uwasa no Shinso (1987–1994), fusing erotic snapshots, street images, and handwritten notes into a chaotic personal chronicle. The title is a joke, the pink dust jacket a provocation, and the book itself a theatre of self-exposure. Araki stages himself in word and image as a debauched artist-monk, obsessed with women, sex, grief, and photography. Every page is a collision of truth and invention. The tone—intimate but grotesque, comic but mournful—lays the groundwork for Araki’s later self-mythologizing books. Visually, it mixes raw flash with vernacular kitsch, collapsing high and low into a single erotic-pulp register. A cult object and a crucial index of Araki’s transition from documentarian to self-brand.
