原色の街 (Primary Color Streets) — Nobuyoshi Araki

A rare 1980s photobook by Nobuyoshi Araki, Genshoku no Machi captures Osaka in the heat and neon of summer, rendered in dense, saturated chromes. Commissioned during the peak of his commercial and diaristic output, Araki’s images here combine street photography with erotic fiction, pairing lurid downtown tableaux with a text that blurs confession and pulp. The dust jacket design—white-on-white emboss over a filmstrip of garish signage and half-shadowed pedestrians—stages the tension perfectly: this is a city both brightly lit and opaque, erotic and mundane. In Araki’s hands, colour is never neutral. His Kodachrome palette turns the banal spectacle of Dōtonbori into something mythic and carnivalesque, vibrating with a hormonal charge. This is the same Araki of Tokyo Lucky Hole, but looser, more playful—interested less in staging than in immersion, letting the city speak through the flash of its lights and bodies. A time capsule of 1980s Kansai decadence, and a crucial precursor to later street colourists like Daido Moriyama and Anders Petersen, who also worked the line between lust and reportage.
