BEWARE — Ari Marcopoulos, 2024
BEWARE is the latest volume in Ari Marcopoulos’ unrelenting visual diary — a publication released on the occasion of his 2024 exhibition at Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris. Designed in collaboration with Roger Willems and published by Roma Publications, the book collects Marcopoulos’ signature raw images across skate, street, studio, and silence. Its title is both a warning and an invitation: to enter a world where proximity is everything and nothing is staged.
Printed in black-and-white on soft uncoated paper, the book pulses with the grain and blur of real time — kids skating, bodies moving, artists in their spaces, darkness, flash, sweat, city. It doesn’t explain. It doesn’t curate. It just goes — a continuation of Marcopoulos’ long-standing method of living-with and looking-at, from the New York underground of the 1980s to the multi-generational, cross-disciplinary friendships that form his present.
As always, the book’s edge lies in its restraint. No captions, no artifice. Just Ari’s eye and the trust of his subjects. Funded in part by Supreme and shaped in dialogue with artists like Kara Walker and Matthew Barney, BEWARE feels like a zine elevated to liturgy — a reverent low-fi testament to presence, risk, and belonging.
