CHILDHOOD — Miki Hasegawa

Miki Hasegawa’s CHILDHOOD is a photobook of sharp silences and subtle devastations. Bound in an unmarked, cream-coloured hardcover bearing only its title, the book resists spectacle, offering instead a sequence of images that unfold like remembered fragments—at once ordinary and opaque. Horses in snow, a frozen sea, a child's toy, long interior shadows: each photograph carries a haunted stillness, a sense of things not said.

While no humans appear in most of the images, their traces are everywhere—in the scuffed floor, in the distant furniture, in the postures of animals, in light falling through windows. There is no caption, no overt narrative, but the emotional charge is unmistakable. The cumulative effect is one of absence made visible: a tender yet unflinching meditation on childhood trauma, and on the way memory lodges itself in space and object.

Like Rinko Kawauchi drained of lyricism, or Raymond Meeks with sharper edges, Hasegawa’s work sits in that rare territory between poetic abstraction and psychological realism. CHILDHOOD is not nostalgic. It’s forensic.
