This is Miquel Barceló’s luminous and tactile record of his years in Mali—part travel diary, part sketchbook, part inner monologue. Cuadernos de África is a personal atlas rendered in ink, dust, and pigment, where bodies, beasts, markets, and rituals drift across the page in watercolour. These notebooks—faithfully reproduced in facsimile—trace the gestures of a Mediterranean painter immersed in the Sahel, at once observing and absorbing.

Printed by Galaxia Gutenberg in 2004, the book gathers drawings, texts and photographic traces from Barceló’s extended stays in Dogon Country, where the landscape’s brutal beauty and everyday resilience fundamentally altered his palette and pictorial rhythm. What emerges is neither a travelogue nor a sketch archive but a painter’s living grammar—fluid, intimate, and unresolved.

The pages radiate with heat and immediacy: ochre outlines, bleeding colours, inked silhouettes of Tuareg men, goats, donkeys, and women bearing vessels. It’s a book of presence more than distance, closer to Delacroix’s North African notebooks than any ethnographic gaze. In the Darwin archive, this belongs among the most personal art books—where drawing becomes thinking and the desert is both mirror and page.
