Erótica — Antonio Saura, 2007
This large book gathers Antonio Saura’s private, convulsive, and ink-drenched visions of the erotic body—figures in dissolution, contorted desire rendered in swift black gestures, a universe of limbs and lust abstracted through the nervous edge of a brush. Published in 2007 by Tàché Editor in Barcelona, Erótica reveals Saura's lifelong engagement with the female form as a psychic terrain of obsession and fracture. His figures—crouched, screaming, headless, defiant—appear in silhouette and stain, stripped of classical contour, more spectre than subject. It is a work of pure compulsion: Eros not as beauty, but rupture.
Born of the postwar Spanish avant-garde, Saura rejected realism for a brutal psychological figuration, and in Erótica this vision tightens into a dark theatre of gesture, lust, and repetition.
A document of painterly libido, blackened with urgency and refusal.
