Hujar:Contact — Joel Smith / Peter Hujar — MACK / Morgan Library & Museum — 2026
The contact sheet exposes what the finished photograph conceals: hesitation, repetition and choice. Drawing on the Morgan’s archive of more than 5,700 sheets and Hujar’s job books, this volume follows his working process from 1954 through the 1980s. Unseen frames sit beside early versions of portraits of Susan Sontag, David Wojnarowicz, Candy Darling and Paul Thek. Joel Smith provides the chronology; Olivia McCall annotates Hujar’s records. Together they reveal photography developing alongside New York’s downtown culture, from Stonewall to the AIDS crisis.
