HUNGER – Jaume Plensa (2006)

A silent scream behind a veil of ink.

This lithograph by Jaume Plensa, from his Serie Anónimos, portrays a veiled woman with the word HUNGER pressed vertically across her face. Rendered in soft black ink on translucent vegetal paper, the portrait seems to dissolve and cry, as if the ink itself is mourning. The repetition of vertical drips creates a rhythmic descent — like bars, rain, or a fall into silence.

Printed in 2006 by Grifoll (Rubí, Barcelona), the work belongs to a body of prints in which Plensa turns anonymous faces into archetypes of collective vulnerability. While his sculptures often scale into monumental silence, these paper works are intimate, direct, and political. Here, hunger is not just a word but a condition written on the body — physical, emotional, global.
