Hurricane Season - Hannah Modigh

This photobook by Swedish photographer Hannah Modigh, published by Max Ström, is part of the Darwin Bookshop because it renders the American South with an intimacy that avoids cliché. Hurricane Season moves through Louisiana and Mississippi with a documentary softness—images of domestic edges, roadside shade, makeshift salons, young girls in conversation, and the weary dignity of rest. Modigh’s camera lingers on the ordinary in ways that sharpen it: a woman in a yellow tube top squats beneath a freeway, haloed in asphalt light; another sits among stray cats and broken furniture, defiantly still. There is no spectacle here—only a steady, human warmth pressed into the slow violence of poverty, geography and time. The South, in Modigh’s view, is not a story to be solved but a climate to be felt. This is America as it lives at ground level: with beauty, with weight, and with no need to explain itself.
