Kuroyami — Sakiko Nomura (signed), Akio Nagasawa Publishing, 2008
Kuroyami is Sakiko Nomura’s quietest and most elusive book—printed in deep blacks and matte silences, it is a meditation on erotic presence barely visible in the dark. Nomura, a former student of Nobuyoshi Araki, is known for her nuanced approach to male nudes and intimacy; here, she pushes even further into abstraction. Bodies surface slowly from darkness, blurred and submerged in shadow, as if photographed through smoke or memory. There’s almost nothing to grasp—no setting, no narrative—just the suggestion of skin and proximity, seen through a gaze that is neither dominant nor passive, but suspended. Published by Akio Nagasawa, Kuroyami belongs in the Darwin archive as a pure study in photographic atmosphere: minimal, dense, and deeply private. It echoes the later Moriyama or early Yamazaki, but with a femininity that resists assertion.
