This facsimile of Ed van der Elsken’s Love on the Left Bank resurrects one of the most cinematic and mythic photo-narratives of postwar Europe. First published in 1956, the book fuses photojournalism, pulp fiction, and romantic myth in a noir-styled portrait of bohemian life in Paris’s Saint-Germain-des-Prés. Structured as a semi-fictional diary, it follows the story of Ann, a drifting dancer loosely based on real-life muse Vali Myers, moving through cafés, cellars, and beds with opiated languor and defiance.

Van der Elsken’s images—gritty, soft, louche—capture a generation between despair and desire, in a city still dusting itself off from war. What makes the book endure is its blend of theatricality and reportage: staged yet alive, scripted yet accidental. His street photography doesn’t just record; it invents a world where rebellion, beauty and ruin fold into each other. A direct ancestor of later European work by Anders Petersen or Christer Strömholm, and a spiritual sibling to Araki’s fictioned diaries, Love on the Left Bank still feels startlingly contemporary in its intimacy and constructed realism.

This 2011 reprint, produced with the involvement of the Nederlands Fotoarchief and Anneke van der Elsken, stays faithful to the 1956 original in layout and tone. With 200 duotone photographs and design by Jurriaan Schrofer, it remains a cornerstone of narrative photobook history.
