Hideoki Hagiwara turns a traditional Okame mask into a playful challenge to Japanese social convention. Made with his American wife Mary and their child Mitsu during a 1973 visit to Japan, the family pictures are paired with nature photographs in a two-part design. Duotone images, black paper and silver-and-white printing reinforce the book’s movement between humour, domestic intimacy and meditation on nature.
