Far Cry — Paulo Nozolino, 2005

Published on the occasion of his 2005 exhibition at the Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Serralves in Porto, Far Cry is Paulo Nozolino’s most distilled and devastating work — a stark compendium of images made between 1977 and 2003 across multiple continents. The book is printed in Nozolino’s signature deep black, where shadows dominate and detail dissolves. Death, silence, and abandonment are not themes here — they are the atmosphere.

With photographs taken from Morocco to Sarajevo, Cairo to Lisbon, this is not a document of place but of a worldview: tragic, uncompromising, and carved from grief. The sequencing moves like a procession — bodies wrapped in sheets, bloodied hospital tiles, scorched landscapes, bare concrete rooms. It’s not reportage, nor art for comfort. Far Cry reads as a visual testament, a concentration of Nozolino’s lifetime of seeing. This copy, from the personal library of Antoine d’Agata (stamp on title page), bears the aura of another photographer working at the same edge — where darkness is not style, but substance.
