Red Flower is the definitive U.S. monograph by Mao Ishikawa, the radical Okinawan photographer who lived the scenes she captured. Shot between 1975 and 1977, the images document women working in bars near U.S. military bases in Koza and Kin—spaces charged with tension, desire, and survival. Ishikawa didn’t just photograph these women—she worked alongside them, befriended them, partied, lived, and listened. The result is a portrait of defiant joy and complex intimacy under occupation.

Originally appearing in her rare and censored 1982 book Hot Days in Camp Hansen, the images in Red Flower have been newly reassembled by Session Press in large-format, full-bleed intensity. The sequencing moves in five loose chapters: girls gossiping, working, with lovers, with children, at the beach. Through it all, Ishikawa’s lens is clear and direct—never romanticising, never judging. Her empathy is grounded, political, and local.

While Okinawa has long fascinated major Japanese photographers—Tomatsu, Moriyama, Araki—Red Flower remains singular in its authorship: Okinawan-born, female, embedded. It is the cornerstone of Ishikawa’s lifelong practice and one of the most urgent feminist photobooks from postwar Japan. Darwin files it as an essential act of photographic resistance—honest, luminous, and alive.
