Archivo Nómada — Alberto García-Alix 1975–1981, Editorial Cabeza de Chorlito
This photobook by Alberto García-Alix, published in 2023 by Editorial Cabeza de Chorlito, gathers previously unseen photographs from the artist’s early years into a raw, tactile volume — printed in risograph and bound in an exposed, hand-stitched spine. Archivo Nómada is the first in a series of volumes that excavate García-Alix’s vast negative archive, focusing here on the formative period of 1975 to 1981: a Spain in transition, a photographer coming into focus.
Unlike the more polished retrospective editions of García-Alix’s work, this book moves with a different rhythm. The photographs — intimate, urban, anonymous, private — are reproduced with a punk, almost fanzine-like energy: black-and-white risograph on coarse paper, punctuated by overprinted fluoro orange typography. The materials and format reflect the life they depict: marginal, nocturnal, in motion.
Designed and produced in Barcelona by a small independent team (with paper from Cyclus 250g and Arena Natural Rough 120g), this edition rejects the preciousness of the monograph and reclaims the archive as something living, physical, and insurgent. Every detail — from the visible binding to the choice of typefaces — builds a book that feels more like a portable exhibition than a finished object.
