Alberto García-Alix — Moto, Editorial Cabeza de Chorlito
This photobook by Spanish photographer Alberto García-Alix, titled Moto and published in 2015 by Cabeza de Chorlito, is part of the Darwin Bookshop because it distills a lifelong obsession with motorcycles into a visual autobiography of speed, solitude and mechanical ritual. Known for his gritty black-and-white portraits of post-Franco counterculture, García-Alix turns the lens inward here—onto the machines that have both carried and haunted him.
Moto is not a documentary on biking culture. It is a metaphysical study of chrome and flesh, shadow and engine. The motorcycles appear not just as objects but as companions, extensions of the body and psyche. García-Alix photographs their parts like relics: handlebars, fuel tanks, valves, always with the texture of grease and darkness. Interspersed with these images are poetic fragments in his own handwriting, tracing memory, addiction, brotherhood and velocity.
Printed entirely in duotone and bound in matte black with gloss-black lettering, the book has a ghosted, tactile presence—elegant and brutal. At Darwin, Moto is held as a cult object, not only for García-Alix collectors but for those drawn to the mythology of movement, masculine vulnerability, and analogue grit.
