A billboard, a flash, a drink, a kiss — this is the party and the people watching.

In “Art school taught them well.”, Edward Cushenberry pulls back from his Polaroid close-ups and gives us a bigger, noisier frame. At the center: a backyard-ish yellow wall, kids in casual fits, drinks in hand, side-eyes flying. On the left, two girls kiss while another teen looks on, caught between curiosity and judgment. On the right, a woman in a red work polo sips her drink like she’s on break from giving a damn, framed by a vending machine and her own silence. And above it all: a giant sign that reads “My Grandpa Charlie”, complete with awkward family embrace. What is this scene? A reunion? A barbecue? An indie movie still that never got made?

This 2017 work trades lo-fi intimacy for observational sprawl. Cushenberry’s line is clean and his palette hyper-flat: bubblegum pinks, mustard yellows, washed-out blues — a kind of alt-cartoon surrealism. It nods to zine aesthetics and art school critiques, but stays grounded in warmth and specificity. Every expression, every smirk or grimace, feels lived-in. He’s documenting not just people, but the way we posture around each other — with beer cans, with crushed-up emotions, with eye-rolls that mean “I care” even when we say we don’t.

One of Cushenberry’s earliest large-format narrative drawings, this piece shows his ability to balance humor and tenderness, shade and affection, all without over-explaining. It’s pure vibe. And it’s watching you back.
