Autorretrato / Self-Portrait — Alberto García-Alix (first edition, 2013)
Published by La Fábrica in 2013, Autorretrato is the most distilled and psychologically direct monograph of Alberto García-Alix — one of the essential figures in post-dictatorship Spanish photography. This compact, bilingual edition folds decades of García-Alix’s work into a single, obsessive axis: the self. Through a sequence of frontal, intimate, and often brutal images, García-Alix performs himself as subject, document, ghost and myth. Portraits become theatre. Flesh becomes negative. Every frame is a testament to a life lived at full exposure, marked by subculture, addiction, defiance and erotic melancholy. His face is a map, his body a recurring motif, returned to over and over with varying levels of lucidity, distortion, and control. As with Anders Petersen or Daido Moriyama, the camera is not a mirror but a tool of rupture — the self made strange. This edition, with graphic design by Nacho Lavernia and layout by Miquel Fluxà, brings the viewer into direct contact with García-Alix’s visual language: stark, unflinching, and deeply human.
