García-Alix. Fotografías. 1977–1998 — Alberto García-Alix
This landmark volume gathers two decades of Alberto García-Alix’s raw, unflinching photographic work — a visual autobiography spanning Madrid’s Movida, heroin, motorcycles, lovers, tattoos, and the shadows that followed. Published by Tf Editores and La Fábrica in 1998, Fotografías. 1977–1998 is the first major monograph of García-Alix’s early output, setting the tone for everything that would follow. Square-format, austere and generous in scale, the book is a procession of silver-toned intensity: faces illuminated mid-desire, still lives of lived-in spaces, and portraits that feel more like encounters than compositions. His subjects — friends, punks, sex workers, comrades — are never exoticised but held close in a visual language of complicity and confrontation. The printing is rich, velvety, and appropriately unpolished. A key object of 1990s photobook culture in Spain, it remains one of the most essential García-Alix publications — not only as a document of a subcultural era, but as an artefact of photography as lived life.
