Published to accompany the exhibition at Photo Elysée, Koudelka / Ikonar functions as both retrospective and self-portrait, structured not by chronology but by constellation — fragments of contact sheets, annotated film edges, and the residue of a life spent in exile, always in search of the image.

The title “Ikonar” is no empty epithet: it refers to the name used for Koudelka by his Roma friends — a gesture of recognition that aligns him with myth, rather than authorship. Here, the book becomes a visual laboratory, offering an unprecedented dive into the physical archive: blown-up negatives, worn jackets, workspaces, filing cabinets, and endless filmstrips annotated in Koudelka’s own hand. Images are both revealed and withheld, framed by editing marks, red grease-pencil borders, and the margins of contact sheets where decisions were made.

Designed in collaboration with the artist, the book resists monumentality in favour of intimacy. It is part studio notebook, part elegy to analog process. The cover alone — a filmstrip over a dark coat suspended like an apparition — captures the psychic terrain of the work: haunted, itinerant, exacting. As with Moriyama or Anders Petersen, the book holds not just photographs but the obsessive grammar of looking, collecting, and withholding. A study in what it means to build a vision out of fragments, and to live in its archive.
