Newton’s Illustrated Nos. 1–4 (Complete Edition) — Helmut Newton (Schirmer/Mosel, 2000)
Between 1987 and 1995, Helmut Newton published four issues of his own radical photo magazine — Helmut Newton’s Illustrated — each one a statement of erotic intent, visual power, and iconographic wit. This 2000 complete edition, produced by Schirmer/Mosel under the direction of June Newton, collects all four rare issues in one volume: Sex and Power, Pictures from an Exhibition, I Was There, and Dr. Phantasms. Across 134 images, Newton assembles a full spectrum of his obsessions: high heels, statuesque women, celebrity portraits, clinical perversity, flash-lit drama, and the fantasy of control. The cover portrait of Warhol is a perfect cipher — impassive, camp, embalmed in leather. Inside, Newton’s eye is both precise and voyeuristic, his world a stylized theatre of dominance and spectacle. Designed in Berlin and printed in Italy, the book carries the cinematic clarity and dark humour that made Newton a singular figure in late 20th-century photography. This volume sits squarely in the Darwin archive between Nobuyoshi Araki’s Sentimental Journey and Mapplethorpe’s X Portfolio — cult, controlled, and wholly exposed.
