In this redesigned 2012 edition, renowned South African photographer David Goldblatt revisits his landmark work from 1973, expanding it with new imagery, reflections, and design. Growing up in the mining town of Randfontein, Goldblatt lived amid the immense presence of gold mines — so when these mines began to decline in the mid‑1960s, he turned his lens on them.
