Terra Vermelha — Tommaso Protti — Void — 2023
The Amazon appears here not as paradise but as contested ground. Built from ten years of work, Protti’s black-and-white photographs connect deforestation, land disputes, drug trafficking, urban violence and evangelical influence across the Brazilian Amazon. The sequence avoids captions and conventional reportage, pushing the reader through fires, rivers, police operations and expanding cities with little narrative security. Winner of the 2019 Carmignac Photojournalism Award, the project became a 224-page book whose stark design refuses to aestheticise the violence it records.
