This striking wooden figure hails from the Agni people of southeastern Côte d’Ivoire, specifically the culturally significant region of Aboisso, near the banks of the Comoé River. Carved with geometric precision and ritual sobriety, the sculpture likely served a protective or intercessory function, typical of Agni statuary used in domestic or spiritual contexts. Its expressive power lies not in movement, but in its concentrated stillness.

The figure’s stance is iconic: rigidly upright, arms crossed at the chest, with a formal symmetry that commands attention. Its proportions are stylized but balanced, and the square base—heavily incised with rhythmic motifs—grounds the figure with architectural gravitas.
