TALES OF TONO — Daido Moriyama — Akio Nagasawa Publishing — 2022
Moriyama’s Tono is less a document of place than an encounter with its lingering myths. First published in 1976 and named after the region’s celebrated collection of folk tales, the photographs move through rural northern Japan with a sense of strangeness that echoes stories of ghosts and unexplained phenomena. Moriyama considers this larger, re-edited version definitive: it restores the images to a more generous scale and adds 49 previously unpublished photographs. The edition is limited to 600 signed and numbered copies.
