Tōno monogatari / Tales of Tono — Daido Moriyama — Kōbunsha Bunko — 2007
Inspired by Kunio Yanagita’s collection of folk narratives, Daido Moriyama travelled to Tōno, in Iwate Prefecture, during the 1970s. His photographs search for the traces of a rural Japan caught between everyday experience and inherited memory. Black-and-white images and Japanese prose bring the journey into a compact photo-essay, inviting the reader to consider how a place can hold stories that remain partly unseen. Moriyama’s encounters become fragments through which landscape, recollection and the act of photographing meet. First published in 1976, the work returns here in a re-edited Kōbunsha Bunko edition from April 2007, with previously uncollected photographs added to the sequence.
