NEW YORK IS — Takayuki Ogawa — Akio Nagasawa Publishing — 2012
Ogawa’s year in New York, from 1967 to 1968, produced a subjective street portrait of a city marked by social and political tension. Named NEW YORK IS by his friend Robert Frank, the series avoids straightforward narrative: individual photographs remain open-ended while accumulating into a sober view of metropolitan life. After Ogawa returned to Japan, the work occupied 41 pages of Camera Mainichi in 1968. This first book edition was published posthumously in 1,000 copies, with texts by Robert Frank, Nathan Lyons, Anne Wilkes Tucker and Ogawa.
